A private client commissioned a complete gut renovation of a circa 1910 Boerum Hill brownstone, seeking to expand from 2,000 to 3,500 square feet while respecting the character of a classic Brooklyn block. The brief called for a seamless blend of traditional detail and contemporary living — honoring the brownstone’s origins without being bound by them.

In this complete townhouse renovation on a great block in classic Brownstone Brooklyn, the goal was to blend timeless design with cutting-edge thought. A mix of old and new can be found throughout from the new ground floor rear addition to the added rooftop deck.

In the open kitchen and dining area, traditional elements like doors and molding come together with modern features such as a statuary marble waterfall kitchen island, custom textured walnut cabinets and Thermador appliances.

The brownstone was expanded with a 21-foot rear addition and a new third floor, opening the family room to a limestone-clad fireplace and a large central kitchen with 12-foot operable glass doors to the garden. Reclaimed chevron oak floors, Calacatta marble countertops, statuary marble sinks, and traditional moldings meet modern hardware and fixtures throughout — old and new in quiet, considered dialogue.
